# Release subscriptions

> Who can subscribe, how to subscribe, free 5 repos and Pro

## What it does

After you subscribe, Starcat polls the repo’s GitHub Releases, updates the [timeline](/release/timeline), and optionally sends [system notifications](/release/notifications).

## Subscribe

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open detail">The repo must already be starred or ingested.</Step>
  <Step title="Tap Subscribe">In the detail pane, **Subscribe to Release**.</Step>
  <Step title="Allow notifications">The first time, macOS may ask for permission—allowing is recommended.</Step>

## Eligibility

| State                    | Can subscribe |
| ------------------------ | ------------- |
| Starred                  | ✅             |
| Not starred but ingested | ✅             |
| Neither                  | ❌             |

Without a valid link, historical subscriptions may remain but polling pauses → [Background refresh](/release/background-refresh).

## Unsubscribe

Cancel from detail or the subscription list to free a slot on the free tier.
